A comparison between Baroque, Cubism, Surrealism and Conceptual art

The four Meninas
Diego Velázquez - Pablo Picasso - Salvador Dalí
  - Joel Peter Witkin

In the first blog of this period we reviewed the painting by Velázquez. In times of the Avant Gardes, different artists try them out by reproducing paintings of the ancient masters of art in his very own interpretation:

In his lasts years, Picasso was worried about having a place in art history, thus he created many paintings in which he compared himself with the Great Masters of the Past. He chose some great famous paintings and made them again with his very particular and distinctive style. Between these, there is a serial of 44 variations about “The Meninas” of Diego Velásquez (1656), the most admired painting of this Baroque artista and of all Spanish painters. In the first blog of this period we have analyzed the meaning of the images of this painting. Picasso respected the core elements of the composition, but modifying some details. For example, the big hound of the original painting was replaced by a tiny little dog. The figure that appears in the sill was replaced by a black silhouette, smaller and more enigmatic than the original one.  Two huge hands grew towards the little princess, so much bigger tan the maid honor´s hands that appeared on Velazquez´s painting. The little princess has been reduced to a small geometric forms, with a small circle like a head.
Picasso's compatriot, Salvador Dalí,was similarly driven to absorb the picture on various levels. Unlike other Surrealists who disdained the Old Masters, Dalí believed there was much to learn from the works of his predecessors. In one homage,  Portrait of Juan de Pareja, shown to the left here, he depicts the court official from Las Meninas standing at the doorway. Elusive is the profile of de Pareja in the centre of the painting, his moustache and beard forming from the grouping of the Spanish Infanta and her attendants. In other homages, Dalí shows off the colour palette that he attributed to Velázquez, as for instance, this pseudo-holographic vision of the Infanta from 1958. Here he distorts the proportions of the composition to make her bigger and, unlike Picasso, makes the figure of the artist smaller and depicts him from behind at work on a canvas that in its turn represents the Infanta.

  1. Which are the differences between the four art pieces?
Each was created from the same scene and idea, but each one is COMPLETELY different from the others in every single aspect. Each was painted in a different way, style, creativity, idea, etc. The messages transmitted are different and some are more difficult to understand; some are more complex.
Which are the similar form and elements that appear in all four?
The scene of the meninas: the main characters and their positions and the room where the scene takes place.
Which was the message that Velazquez wanted to send when he created the Meninas?
I´ll say the message I received instead: It shows the joy and boredom of the high class families.
    Which was Picasso´s?
It expresses how aristocracy´s manners and behaviours can’t be understood and that they are weird.
    And Dali´s?
That aristocracy sees and treats people not as persons, but as numbers; as pieces of a puzzle they´ve solved that gives them the satisfaction of being superior. It also expresses the logical and boring way of thinking high class people had before.
    And Witkin´s?
It expresses the evil that men do. It expresses purity corrupted by sins and temptations. It represents the death of innocence.

  3. 1 The differences in the paintings are the techniques they used, but they respected the original idea and the main elements.

2 All the characters appear in the paintings to mantain the idea of the meninas, but they have different shapes.

3 He wanted to show the art the way he wanted, because in that time artists were only for the church.
4 He wanted to bring back that painting but with his own technique, and to make the people reflect about it.
5 The one that people are represented as numbers. I think that the numbers he used, is to express the importance of the people in that time.
6 It represents fear, loneliness because he didn`t use any color and also the images are scary.

  4. 1. Three of the paintings(Witkin, Picasso and Dalí) may be considered as vanguardism, but the original "The Meninas" from Velazquéz, is a baroque style. The four of them have different colors, perspective of characters and the enviroment of each painting is a pole apart from the other.

2.The characters, in some way, are the same; each painting has the same number of characters but they are represented with a different style. In all of them are very clear the main elements, the infanta, the men upon the door, Velazquez making the portrait and the hound.

    3. I think he wanted to represent the bourgeoises life-style. On how since they where kids they had unnecessary atention of the servants.

4.Picasso replaced the big hound of the original piece with a little dog. The men that appears on the door is also replaced by a smaller black figure. He also used a grey scale on the palette of colors.

5.Dalí changed the characters to numbers. What makes it more confussing is the strange repetition of number 7 in most of the characters. The palette of color is between different brown colors.

    6. Witkin turned the original painting into a disgusting new kind of representation. He made pressence of his bizare style, creating an unreal scene with real material.

Well each of this pices wants to transmit a different message according to the painter and the time it was made, also the colors used and other elements are painted different, but then again depending on the painter.

Well there´s no similar elements, its all exactly the same just that it´s painted different, the background is exactly the same, also the characters.

Which was the message that Velazquez wanted to send when he created the Meninas?

maybe he wanted to show that in that time the people that raised the aristocracy was not the rich, but the poor and needed, because in that time it was really common to treat maids as slaves

    Which was Picasso´s?

This painter recreated the painting but in my opinion he just wanted to make it his own way without changing the original message.

    And Dali´s?

Maybe he tried to say with his paintings that the aristocracy in that time is based in numbers and not so much in people.

That everyone has a different point of view, so that depending of what they understand and what they are trying to transmit is how they are going to paint it, each painter use different techniques.

Which are the similar form and elements that appear in all four?
Firstly that all the paints that appear are the same "The Meninas" but painted in different ways, the paint number 2 and number 4 are only in black and white while the paint one and three are with warms colors like yellow.

Which was the message that Velazquez wanted to send when he created the Meninas?
He only wanted to show as indeed was, how they all treat her everyday. It's more directly, you can see perfectly the girl and all her meninas. He wanted to show the beauty.

    Which was Picasso´s?
Here Picasso doesn't mind if the figures he draw were proportional or pretty, he only paint it as he could or as he precept it maybe.

    And Dali´s?
This paint makes you think a little bit more, because the paint only have numbers but if you pay attention yes, you can see the meninas too, he percept the meninas like if they were numbers so he draw it like that.

    And Witkin´s?
He find beauty in death people so he just rearrange them like in the meninas paint, he added another things to have their style and thats it, he painted.
