Baroque - Las Meninas

Diego Velazquez was born in Seville in the country of Spain. When he was about thirteen years old he was apprenticed to a painter, Francisco Herrera, but the man was such a tyrant Diego only stayed with him for a year. He next went as an apprentice to Francisco Pacheco who was very kind and helpful to him. He worked for him five years, then married Pacheco's daughter, Juana, who gave him two daughters.

With his family and his father-in-law, Pacheco, he visited Madrid where he was asked to paint the portrait of King Philip IV of Spain who was 18 years old. The Spanish king was so pleased, he asked Velazquez to move to Madrid with his family and work exclusively for the royal family. He was the favorite of the king's four painters. For the next forty years he and his family lived with the king. Even his mother and father lived with them. He painted at least 20 pictures of the king in all kinds of clothing.

The king had a chair in the artist's studio so he could sit and watch him paint. Velazquez used a long-handled brush so he could see how his brush strokes looked from a distance away from the canvas.

Our featured work in this lesson has been named Las Meninas. The "meninas" were the young daughters of noblemen's families who waited on the young princess who was called an "infanta". The young girl is serving the princess something in a cup. The artist with the brush in his hand is, of course, Velazquez. His special clothing shows he is a knight. If you look at the reflection in the mirror, you can see the king and queen who are apparently posing while the artist paints their picture.

Las Meninas really has two subjects. One is the subject the artist is painting and then we also see the main characters in the room.
He painted several pictures of dwarfs such as the figures you see at the right of the picture. These were the court jesters who entertained the king and his family.
Velazquez also was in charge of buying things for the royal family. He bought art work and furniture. He was in charge of planning and decorating for social events. He helped the king keep the household running smoothly. The king was so appreciative he made him a Knight of the Order of Santiago. This was a very high honor for a nobleman in Spain.

Velazquez also worked with topics as still-lives, portrait and religious paintings. So, I want you to search for a painting of Diego Velázquez about any of these topics and add a five lines´paragraph in which you can explain what you think is the connotative message of the painting. Be sure to add the image and basic information of the painting.

  2. The artist created his own image of the goddess Venus, but the idea and present it back recline, with Cupid holding the mirror comes from Titian.
Instead of showing strong contrasts of light and shade and develop detailed faithfully the surface texture of objects to create an illusion of reality, Velázquez come here to paint what the eye actually sees.

The background scene is taken from Luke and is intended as a picture within a picture, or perhaps as a reflection in a mirror, but it is more likely to be a scene that takes place in an adjoining room, seen through an opening in the wall.

I think that this painting represent the hard work of the spinners that were in that time and he wanted to represent in what conditions they worked and also the difference between the poor people that are the spinners and the rich people that are behind the spinners that when the spinners worked a lot the rich people were having fun.

I have choose this painting because for me the connotative message in this painting is that the woman that appears was a little bit selfish, because of the mirror and she wanted to be perfect for someone, her skin looks like really soft, the angel that has the mirror thinks she looks perfect beacuse of the way he looks her.

At breakfast, kept in the Hermitage Museum, the artist shows us two cheerful young people have apparently invited to an old man, perhaps a vagrant.

Velázquez highlights the gesticulating young, full of life and courage, whose attitude contrasts with that of some still and quiet old man who, while listening to the youth talk, shows signs of having great experience. The comparison between youth and age is made of a delicate and tactful.

There is a critical, lucid and autonomous painter that its main topic is the social organization of Habsburg Spain.

This painting was made by Diego Velázquez, no one know when he painted. Some people think that he painted during his first trip to Italy that was during the 1629 to 1631; other people think that was during his second trip (1649 to 1651). In the painting we can see an arc that is blocked and in the background a forest. What I thought of this painting is that Diego Velázquez wanted to let us know that the forest is a place of knowledge and were kind of blocking it.

    Artist Diego Velázquez
    Year 1659
    Type Oil on canvas
    Dimensions 127 cm × 107 cm (50 in × 42 in)
    Location Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna

Infanta Margarita Teresa in a Blue Dress is a one of the best known portraits by Spanish painter Diego Velázquez. It was done in oil on canvas, and measures 127 cm high by 107 cm wide. It was one of his last paintings, produced in 1659, a year before his death. It shows Margaret Theresa of Spain, who also appears in the artist's Las Meninas. Currently, the painting is in the Kunsthistorisches Museum.
This is one of the several court portraits made by Velázquez, who, in different occasions portrayed Infanta Margaret Theresa, who married at fifteen her uncle, Leopold I, Holy Roman Emperor. She's the little infanta who appears in Las Meninas (1656). These paintings show her in different stages of her childhood, and they were sent to Vienna to inform Leopold how her young fiancée looked like.
The Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna has other two outstanding paintings by Velázquez: Infanta Maria Teresa and Prince Philip Prospero. However, this portrait of Infanta Margarita is possibly the best of the three.
In this painting, Velázquez used the technique loose brushstrokes that fuse into coherence only when viewed from a certain distance. The infanta, here eight years old, is shown with a solemn expression. She wears a blue silk dress, adorned with silver borders after the Spanish fashion of the era; the most striking characteristic is the huge expanse of the voluminous crinoline, which is accentuated by the trimmed borders and the wide lace collar. In one of her hands she holds a brown fur muff, perhaps a present from Vienna. The young girl, who is presented as pretty and appealing, has a pale countenance which is enhanced by the blue and silver tones. In the background there is a high console table with a round mirror behind it.

I choose "Christ in the house of Martha and Mary" The picture combine three genres:the still life, the domestic portrait, and the religious painting in a single image. The picture contrasts two different spaces:the kitchen and the background in the dining room he links them to the Biblical story of the two sisters Martha and Mary. Martha busily preparing the meal, while her sister, Mary, sat at Jesus’s feet and listened to his word.
